Programs That Ease Medicare Costs in New Jersey
Medicare costs add up. Between the monthly Part B charge, deductibles and pharmacy copays, many Perth Amboy retirees on a fixed income feel the squeeze. The good news is that several programs exist to help, and many people who qualify never apply.
We explain the main federal and New Jersey programs, help you see which ones might fit and point you to the right office to apply. There is no charge for this guidance.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
Medicare Savings Programs
New Jersey administers the Medicare Savings Programs for residents whose income and savings fall under set limits. Depending on the level, a program may pay your Part B premium and, at the top level, your deductibles and coinsurance as well.
With the standard Part B premium at $202.90 a month in 2026, having it covered can mean more than $2,400 back in your budget each year. Qualifying for one of these programs also usually qualifies you for Extra Help with drugs.
Extra Help With Prescriptions
Washington's Extra Help, known in paperwork as the low-income subsidy, shaves down drug plan premiums, deductibles and pharmacy copays. It also gives members more frequent chances to switch drug plans.
If your income is modest and your drug costs are high, it is worth checking. We can explain how to apply and how it changes your plan comparison.
PAAD and Senior Gold
Trenton funds two prescription programs of its own. PAAD, Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Aged and Disabled, helps eligible residents pay for prescriptions. Senior Gold helps residents whose income is a bit higher than the PAAD limit.
Both programs work alongside Part D. Income limits are updated by the state, so we check current figures with you. In Perth Amboy, the Office on Aging at the A.J. Community Center helps residents fill out PAAD and Senior Gold applications by appointment.
NJ FamilyCare for People With Medicare
Some residents qualify for full NJ FamilyCare benefits on top of Medicare. That can open the door to dual eligible plans that coordinate both programs and often lower costs further.
Steps That Help Any Budget
- Ask for a plan review every autumn, since premiums and drug prices change
- Compare preferred pharmacies and 90-day mail order for maintenance drugs
- Ask your doctor about generic or lower-tier alternatives
- Keep records of income changes, which can affect eligibility
Programs change and eligibility depends on details. We are glad to walk through your situation and refer you to the right agency, even if no plan change is needed.
