Prescription Coverage Built Around Your Refills
A Part D plan is private drug coverage approved by Medicare. You buy one on its own if you keep Original Medicare, with or without a supplement. If you choose a Medicare Advantage plan, prescriptions are usually included inside it.
Every Part D plan keeps its own list of covered drugs, places those drugs on price tiers and works with a group of preferred pharmacies. The plan that saved your neighbor money can be a poor match for your prescriptions.
We run your actual medicines, strengths and quantities through each plan we offer and show you the yearly total, not only the monthly premium.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
What Changed Recently for Drug Costs
Federal law reshaped drug coverage over the last few years. For 2026 there is a hard stop: after $2,100 of your own money goes toward covered medicines, the pharmacy charges you zero for covered fills until New Year's Day.
Covered insulin is limited to $35 for each month's supply, and recommended adult vaccines covered under Part D come with no cost sharing. A plan may still charge a deductible at the start of the year, and it may differ from one plan to the next.
A newer billing choice, the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, takes the sting out of early-year refills by turning what you owe at the register into smaller monthly installments. We explain whether it would help with your pattern of refills.
Reading the Formulary the Right Way
Insurers call their drug list a formulary. We check three things for each of your medicines: whether it appears at all, which tier it sits on and whether the plan attaches rules to it.
- Prior authorization, where your doctor must justify the drug before the plan pays
- Step therapy, where the plan wants a cheaper drug tried first
- Quantity limits on how many pills you can fill at once
- Different prices at preferred and standard pharmacies
Insurers redraw those lists every January, which is one reason an autumn plan review is worth the half hour.
Local Pharmacies and Mail Order
Many Perth Amboy clients fill prescriptions at a drugstore within walking distance of home or along Smith Street and New Brunswick Avenue. Before you settle on a plan, we confirm that your usual pharmacy is in the network and whether it counts as preferred, since that can change the copay.
If you take maintenance drugs for blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes, a 90-day supply by mail sometimes costs less. We show both prices so you can decide which is more convenient.
Avoiding the Late Enrollment Penalty
Skip drug coverage for more than about two months after your first window closes, without an employer or union plan that measures up, and Medicare tacks a surcharge onto every future premium. The longer the gap, the larger that permanent add-on.
Coverage from a large employer or union plan often counts as creditable. Those plans send an annual letter stating whether they qualify; tuck it in a safe folder. We are happy to look it over.
If Medicine Costs Strain the Budget
Households on small budgets may get Extra Help from Washington, which trims what you pay each month and at the counter. On the state side, PAAD and Senior Gold step in for qualifying New Jersey residents. Our page on reducing your Medicare bills explains each program, and the Office on Aging on Olive Street helps residents apply by appointment.

Usually only in the autumn window from October 15 to December 7, unless you qualify for a special period, such as moving or gaining Extra Help.

Your doctor can ask the plan for an exception, or you can talk with your doctor about a covered alternative. We can help you check the options.
I am healthy and take nothing. Why buy a drug plan?
A bargain plan now keeps the permanent surcharge off your record and protects you the day a doctor writes something new.
