Part C Guidance for Perth Amboy Households
Plenty of Perth Amboy retirees end up on a Medicare Advantage plan, and the appeal is easy to understand. A single private plan takes over your hospital and medical benefits, usually folds in prescriptions, and often tosses in a few routine perks the federal program skips.
That convenience comes with rules, though. Every Part C plan has its own provider list, its own approval steps and its own price tags, and those details shift every January. Our role is to lay the carriers we represent next to each other and test each one against the way you actually use care.
We hold these conversations by phone or video, en español or in English, and a relative can listen in whenever you like.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
How Part C Works, in Plain Terms
Medicare Advantage is sometimes called Part C. It is coverage sold by insurance companies that hold a contract with Medicare. Instead of the government paying your claims, the plan pays them, following federal minimum rules.
- You still have Parts A and B, and you keep paying the Part B charge unless a state program covers it
- Most of these plans include drug coverage, so you carry one membership card
- Each plan sets a yearly spending ceiling for covered medical care, which the federal program by itself lacks
- Many add routine extras; our teeth, eyes and ears page explains what those usually look like
Start With Your Doctors and Your Hospital
Before we even talk about premiums, we write down every clinician you see. For a lot of families here that means Raritan Bay Medical Center on New Brunswick Avenue, part of Hackensack Meridian Health, plus specialists in Edison, New Brunswick or over the Outerbridge Crossing on Staten Island.
Then we look up each name inside each plan's directory. A low price is meaningless if your heart doctor or your dialysis center is missing from the list. We also confirm that your corner pharmacy near Smith Street, or your mail-order service, is a preferred location.
HMO designs usually keep you inside a set group of providers and ask for a referral before a specialist visit. PPO designs let you go outside the group, but you pay more when you do. We walk through which trade-off fits your habits.
Costs to Expect in 2026
A plan advertised at $0 a month is not free. You may owe a flat fee at each office visit, a percentage for imaging, and a daily charge during a hospital stay. The plan's annual ceiling on covered medical spending limits how high that can climb.
On the drug side, this year's federal rule stops your covered prescription spending at $2,100. Covered insulin cannot cost you more than $35 for a month's supply. We plug in your exact medicines and doses so the yearly estimate reflects real refills.
If the budget is tight, our page on lowering Medicare costs covers New Jersey's PAAD and Senior Gold programs, the state savings programs and federal Extra Help.
Windows for Joining or Changing
The main season is autumn. Between October 15 and December 7 you may sign up for a Part C plan, trade one for another or drop back to the federal program, and the choice starts on January 1.
Members who already have Part C also get a short winter window, January 1 through March 31, to make a single move to a different Advantage plan or back to Original Medicare. Moving out of the area, losing job coverage and certain other events can open a Special Enrollment Period. New to Medicare altogether? See our 65th birthday guide.
Plans Built for Specific Groups
Special Needs Plans narrow their focus to people with something in common. Some serve members who have Medicaid as well as Medicare. Others enroll people living with certain chronic illnesses, like diabetes or chronic heart failure, and shape their benefits around that.
If you hold NJ FamilyCare, our dual eligible page explains how these combined plans try to cut down on paperwork and bills.
Could Part C Be a Good Match?
Often a fit when
- Every doctor you see shows up in the plan's directory
- You would rather carry a single card for doctors and drugs
- A firm ceiling on yearly medical costs gives you peace of mind
- Built-in dental or eyeglass benefits appeal to you
Pause and compare when
- You spend months at a time in the Caribbean or another state
- Freedom to use any Medicare provider matters most
- Getting approval before tests or procedures frustrates you
- Your specialist does not take any local plan

Click to CallPart C Questions We Hear Most
How is Part C different from a supplement?
They work in opposite ways. Medicare Advantage takes over paying your claims, while a Medigap policy sits beside Original Medicare and pays leftover costs. You cannot hold both at the same time.
Do I give up Medicare by joining an Advantage plan?
No. You remain a Medicare beneficiary with the same appeal rights. The Part B charge still applies unless a state program pays it on your behalf.
Will a plan cover my doctors on Staten Island?
Some plans include New York providers and others do not. We look up each doctor by name for every plan before you pick.
Can my son sit in on the review?
Of course. With your OK, any relative or caregiver can join, and the whole talk can happen in Spanish.
Do you charge for this?
Never. If you enroll, the insurance company pays us, and the plan's price stays the same for you either way.
